The Upside Mentoring

At Uppertunity, we provide a pluralistic mentoring service for individuals with additional needs, learning disabilities, autism, physical health barriers and mental health barriers to resolve personal problems.

“Having a welcoming space that is free of judgement has helped me to be open about how I feel about my life.”

What does pluralistic mean?

Pluralistic mentoring involves the therapist offering a range of different approaches and techniques to assist the client in addressing their specific problems. The client chooses from a broad range of tools and techniques that suits them best.

This type of approach is about using a combination of methods and theories, tailoring the sessions to the individual’s needs with an emphasis on working collaboratively. Our methods include talking therapy, mindfulness, sensory cubes, gardening, art, baking and more.

What are the benefits?

· Developing a greater degree of self-awareness, and a better understanding of self and others

· Improving self-esteem and becoming reflective in personal relationships

· Potentially leading to healthier life choices

· Finding increased enjoyment and fulfillment in life

· Improving self-knowledge and clarity of mind

· Developing coping mechanisms for the future

What happens at a session?

When clients initially join, we find out what their current world looks like and what they would like their future world to look like. We use different assessments tools such as ‘My World Triangle’, ‘Wellbeing Wheel’ and ‘Anxiety Measures’ in the first session. This is used throughout the individual’s journey with us. Sessions last approximately 50 minutes.

You’ll be asked a range of questions, for example, about your background and the people in your life. It is helpful for the therapist to know as much as possible about you to ensure that this service is the right option to help you. We want to understand how you perceive your problems and what changes you would like to make in your life, helping you to identify goals/aims. If you wish to continue mentoring, a mutual agreement will be made. You will see the same person and build a relationship with them, and sessions will usually occur weekly at the same time. On rare occasions, a client might need referral on to another agency. If this is the case, then the therapist will discuss this with you.

All you share with your therapist remains confidential and is not disclosed to anyone else. There are some rare exceptions to this which the therapist will advise you about: clients who are at risk of harming themselves or others; disclosures of child abuse or any other form of risk to the well-being of a child; and involvement in terrorism or other criminal activity

Each session is summarised in a ‘Progress Report’, and all information concerning clients is held and processed strictly in accordance with General Data Protection Regulation. Clients may have access to their records and there is a procedure to follow to enable this. Please ask for more information if needed.
