We offer a weekly garden volunteering programme called
Growing Places. Uppertunity aims to develop the community in every way
possible and includes our members in this development. One of the ways
we achieve this is through gardening. Our volunteers are in charge of creating a beautiful environment within Uppertunity’s premises. Volunteers
are in charge of:
Developing and maintaining the land
Growing herbs, vegetables, fruit and flowers
Creating outdoor art and a sensory area
Helping develop biodiversity
Turning the produce into food
And creating wood work pieces.
This group is open to all individuals of any ability, and the venue and activities are wheelchair accessible, and includes beverages.
We do ask that members who are joining to make a commitment where they will attend regularly. Volunteer numbers are limited to 6 per session.
All volunteering hours are recorded and members can choose to partake in the Grow and Learn award as well - a horticultural award specifically designed for adults with additional needs.
When and where:
We have 3 separate gardening areas at our main location at The Circle.
Current volunteering days are Friday's 10am to 12pm, followed by a group lunch.
We have some exciting and proud news to share. We took part in the Grow and Learn, supporting 9 of our members to achieve the award through The Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society - The Caley. It is a person-centred award, recognising individual progress and achievement in horticulture.
Covid-19 and restrictions held things up a bit, but we finally received the physical certificates and have been able to post them on. We aren't able to have a physical ceremony at the moment, but none the less, George Anderson from the Beechgrove Garden stepped in and created an online one for us! Thank you!
A big well done to all the participants and and all the staff and volunteers who provided support along the way! Gardening has so many social, environmental and health benefits, and we feel that these benefits should be made accessible to all.
We would also like to say a a big thank you to Action Earth for helping to fund all our gardening projects! Thank you and well done everyone! Happy gardening!
